Βασισμένη στην «Οδύσσεια» του Ομήρου, η ταινία ακολουθεί τον Οδυσσέα, βασιλιά της Ιθάκης, στην πολυετή και επικίνδυνη προσπάθειά του να επιστρέψει στην πατρίδα του μετά τον Τρωικό Πόλεμο. Στο ταξίδι του έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με τέρατα, θεούς, ναυάγια και μυθικά πλάσματα όπως ο Κύκλωπας Πολύφημος, η μάγισσα Κίρκη και η Καλυψώ.
